How Can Forst Help You

Mendham NJ

With the core of the building built sometime around 1834, the renovation of the Ogden Murphy House was going to be a challenge. The house built in the Greek Revival style most likely by Aaron Hudson, had been subject to numerous additions and alterations throughout the years. These projects involving verious building techniques subjected the home to structure changes both unique and in some cases compromising. Many of the framing deficiencies were not obvious until the building was totally gutted.

Floors were leveled and walls brought bask to plumb. Items that could not be salvaged were demolished and rebuilt. All during the course of construction the historical significance of the home was kept in sight. As you enter the building through the rear entrance, notice the tumbled marble floor and the cast iron stove that reminds you this is no ordinary doctors office. The attention to detail reflected in the waiting room window and door casing seem to transport you back to a time long ago. Thsi detail and craftsmanship is apparent throughout the building.

The buildings mechanical systems have been upgraded to include a state of the art heating and cooling system including water to air heat exchangers, electrical and plumbing systems designed to meet the highly demanding needs requirements of a medical office building. As all commercial buildings today, the building has been brought up to meet all A.D.A. requirements including the wheelchair ramp which is barely noticeable behind the period diagonal hand rail with pineapple finnials. Even the employee lunchroom with its stone fireplace, was not spared from the historical eye of its new designer.

On the exterior, the attention to detail is even more evident, from the period shutters with custom fabricated copper caps to the gardens that even Harriet Murphy would have been happy to stroll in.

Along with the current owners and Architect, we are proud to have been able to expand and renovate the building with a goal of preserving it's historic importance and beauty. This building is truly a significant icon of the historic community of Mendham.
